If you saw a colleague Monday morning with a streak of paint in her hair, chances are it wasn’t a fashion statement.
On Saturday, June 28, some 800 members of the Atlanta legal community—partners, associates, summer associates, judges, paralegals and their friends and family members—put down their BlackBerrys for a half day and picked up paint brushes, hammers and shovels. They met at Turner Field at 8 a.m. and boarded buses to a charter school near downtown Atlanta where hands toughened only by keyboards would pick up paint brushes, sand paper, rakes and shovels.
Like all Georgia charter schools, the Atlanta Charter Middle School building in the city’s diverse Ormewood neighborhood was purchased with private funds raised by parents. The school serves a racially and economically diverse student body in Southeast Atlanta, and its early success has resulted in a waiting list for admission.
After paying for a new roof, air conditioning and asbestos removal for the 81-year-old building, parents had nothing left for such luxuries as paint, landscaping and beautification, says incoming board chairwoman Gigi Conner.
A former paralegal, Conner turned to Service Juris and Hands On Atlanta and asked for help. The result was a near-instant makeover of classrooms, hallways, the auditorium and school grounds.
Service Juris is an annual event coordinated by Hands On Atlanta and supported by the legal community, which has come together for a half day of roll-up-your-sleeves volunteerism each year since 2000.

Thank You! to Hands on Atlanta and the legal community, from a parent of a now-graduated 8th grader and of a rising 6th grader, who will enjoy the improvements when he starts ACMS in August. The “instant make-over” looks great! These pictures tell a story to inspire the students, as well as parents, board, & staff at the school.
