State budget to be big topic at bar meeting, Cavan says

The State Bar of Georgia’s annual meeting kicks off Thursday at Amelia Island Plantation in Florida.

The State Bar’s president, Bryan M. Cavan, said he expects budget cuts to the Georgia judiciary to be a big topic of discussion as the bar’s leadership plans its agenda for the upcoming year. Like the state’s fiscal year, the State Bar’s year starts in July.

Cavan said the bar’s leadership has been working with the state’s legislative and executive branches the past year to preserve as much of the courts’ budget as possible. “We’ve done a lot this year to remind them that the judiciary is the third branch of our government, not an agency, and has certain constitutional mandates,” he said.
