Judiciary budget dominates bar addresses

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla.—Cuts to the state judiciary budget were a big topic in reports from four lawyers in the General Assembly to the State Bar’s outgoing board of governors on Friday.

Sen. Seth Harp, R-Midland, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Rep. Wendell Willard, R-Sandy Springs, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, also addressed the passage of a bill increasing court filing fees and the failure of the updated model evidence bill to pass the 2010 legislative session.

Harp warned his fellow lawyers that more cuts to the judicial budget could be in the offing. He said the 2009-2010 state budget was based on projected revenue of $21.5 billion. As the year draws to a close, actual revenue has turned out to be $15.5 billion, he said.

State budget to be big topic at bar meeting, Cavan says

The State Bar of Georgia’s annual meeting kicks off Thursday at Amelia Island Plantation in Florida.

The State Bar’s president, Bryan M. Cavan, said he expects budget cuts to the Georgia judiciary to be a big topic of discussion as the bar’s leadership plans its agenda for the upcoming year. Like the state’s fiscal year, the State Bar’s year starts in July.

Cavan said the bar’s leadership has been working with the state’s legislative and executive branches the past year to preserve as much of the courts’ budget as possible. “We’ve done a lot this year to remind them that the judiciary is the third branch of our government, not an agency, and has certain constitutional mandates,” he said.
